Around 3.02 lakh students would be appearing for the Maharashtra Health and Technology Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) on Thursday. The exam would be conducted in 786 centres across the state. This could probably be the last year for a state-based entrance test for medical courses with the centre deciding to conduct a common test across the country from the next academic year.
From Mumbai alone, 12,213 candidates are set to take the examination and 24,623 candidates have registered from the city’s suburbs. There are in all 79 centres in the Mumbai urban and suburban areas. Around 3,905 seats are up for grabs in the health science courses and 1,14,268 seats are available in engineering colleges across the state.
For the candidates, it is almost the last major test of the season. “After the chaotic All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) this year, we are hoping for a simple and smooth state CET. Also, this is the last entrance exam that I am appearing for this year. I hope to secure a seat in one of the reputed institutes. There is a lot of apprehension this year with the AIEEE paper leak,” said Rajneesh Shah, an aspiring engineer.
A total of 45,541 candidates are appearing just for the health science courses, 1,07,733 candidates are appearing only for the engineering courses while 1,49,410 are appearing for both the courses. Candidates are expected to reach their centres much in advance as it is a working day.
For the benefit of students, this year, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), the organising body, has increased the interval duration between paper–I and paper-II for the smooth conduct of the examination. “Last year the break between the two papers was less. This had led to a lot of confusion. This year we are planning to increase the interval duration,” said an official. According to a DMER official, “Next year onwards, the state would be conducting entrance tests only for engineering and pharmacy courses.”
