A day after medical interns called off their week-long strike, the state authorities have done an about-turn. On Monday, Mantralaya issued a notice stating that the honourable minister (medical education minister Dr Vijaykumar Gavit) had never given assurance that no action would be taken against the striking interns.
The authorities pointed out that despite meetings held with members of the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI), they continued their strike and had even protested outside Mantralaya, which was not right on their part. The interns agreed to call off the strike after they spoke to Gavit.
“We resumed work today. The deans of our respective colleges accepted our joining letters. It’s understood that no action will be initiated against us,” said Dhawal Shah, Mumbai co-ordinator for ASMI. “We don’t know why the authorities are saying that they never made such statements.”
Joint director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, NN Ambhore, said that the meeting about the interns’ stipend and action against them for the illegal strike was still on.
“We had issued them warnings, which have not yet been withdrawn. We are discussing the further course of action,” said Ambhore.
