Medical interns from 18 medical colleges across the state as well as BMC-run colleges started their indefinite hunger strike outside KEM Hospital on Monday demanding a hike in their stipends. Medical services, however, largely remained unaffected.
The strike, called by the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI), is mainly to demand a raise in stipend from Rs 13, 000 from Rs 2550. The interns had a discussion with Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER). “The government’s response is lukewarm at best,” said ASMI spokesperson Dr Ankush Nawale. Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) too is contemplating participation ‘if their demands are not met,’ said Dr Pankaj Nalawade of central MARD. The Yuva Sena has supported the strike.
