The Private Universities Bill was finally introduced in the Maharashtra legislative assembly on Thursday. The Bill is in keeping with the global outlook prevalent in the academic world, a key bureaucrat said that soon after the legislation was moved in the House, Minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope tabled the Bill.
It is learnt that the Bill will be discussed in the monsoon session of the state legislature. The state cabinet had put the finishing touches to the Bill at a recent meeting. Tope said that the legislation will enhance the academic infrastructure in the state. Inquiries revealed that every private player’s proposal in the education sector will be brought before the state legislature for discussion and clearance. Neither the state cabinet nor the education ministry will be invested with the authority to take the final call, a bureaucrat said.
