Durgapur: A Durgapur school has labelled a fouryear-old boy a special child and asked his mother to withdraw him. Authorities of Hem Sheela Model School claimed that Arindam Chakraborty is hyperactive and needs special attention.
The classteacher reportedly complained against him after he kept on calling her “mother” despite warnings and poked a student with his pencil. Arindam lost his father before he was born.
The child’s mother Sudeshna though claimed that all medical tests had shown her son was perfectly normal. She has lodged a written complaint against the school with the SDO.
The guardians are also behind Sudeshna. The convener of the guardian’s forum, Jainaul Haq, said: “If the medical reports are fine, why is the school having a problem with him? His classmates are fine with him. We want to sit with the school authorities and discuss the matter, but they are not giving us an appointment.” The forum will sit on a dharna on Saturday if the meeting is not held by then.
The child lost his father, an army officer, in an accident before he has born. He stays with his mother and grandparents in Durgapur and is among the brightest in his class, scoring over 90% marks while being promoted from preparatory to nursery.
Sudeshna, a lecturer in a private college, claims she had taken Arindam for physical and mental tests along with counselling sessions twice and doctors had given him a clean chit. Experts at HOPE, in Durgapur, and Belle View Clinic, Kolkata, found nothing abnormal with her son, she said.
Soumen Chakraborty, acting principal of Hem Sheela Model School, denied the allegations. “Another 311 students study with Arindam and they don’t create problems like him. He is a special child and needs special attention.”
Durgapur SDO Ritendra Naryan Basu Roy Choudhury said that he had asked the school to maintain status quo till the matter was probed.
