Demand for new academy for regional languages

Political parties today favoured an academy for regional languages to promote and protect languages spoken in Jharkhand.
The demand was made at an all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arjun Munda, who promised to look into it.

Senior BJP leader Dipak Prakash said a Regional Local Language Academy would help protect and promote Santhali, Kuruk, Mundari, Ho, Khadia (all tribal dialects), Nagpuri, Khota, Panchpargania and Kurmali.

JMM central committee secretary Suprio Bhattacharya said Bangla and Santhali should be accorded the status of second language.

CPI state secretary Bhubaneswar Mehta said though Bangla and Santhali languages were to be notified in 2005 when Arjun Munda was the chief minister, nothing has been done so far.

Jharkhand PCC general secretary Sailesh Sinha said, "Development of regional languages is connected with the progress of society."
