The Bombay High Court has asked the University of Mumbai to file an affidavit by next week stating why it did not honour degrees of Annamalai University and directed the varsity to allow a student pursuing law degree to appear for the ongoing first year LLB examination.
The order was passed by Justice Ajay Khanvilkar and Justice Mridula Bhatkar on April 13 on a petition filed by Vinothan Ramankrishnan who had secured admission in LLB in University of Mumbai on the strength of M A degree obtained by him from Annamalai University through correspondence course.
When the petitioner applied for hall ticket, he was told by the Registrar that his degree of Annamalai University was not recognised by the University of Mumbai.
The petitioner moved the Court contending that HRD ministry of Union Government and Tamil Nadu Government had recognised the degrees of Annamalai University. He urged that University of Mumbai should also be directed to follow suit.
The judges asked the University of Mumbai to allow the petitioner to appear for LLB examination, which commenced yesterday. They further ordered the varsity to withhold his result until further orders of the court.
The judges also ruled that the petitioner would not be able to claim any right merely because he has been allowed to appear for the examination.
They observed that when the Centre has approved the degrees of Annamalai University then why the University of Mumbai should not recognise them.
The bench asked University of Mumbai to explain what was the logic behind not approving the degrees of Annamalai University. The varsity replied that the degrees of Annamalai university were not equivalent to their degrees.
