Three higher education colleges from Mumbai are among 16 from the state shortlisted by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for a grant-inaid to upgrade the quality of education and teaching infrastructure.
On Monday, the state cabinet will discuss a proposal for funding a portion of the grant. The Centre has already committed to fund 60 per cent of the total grant.
The grant, which will be provided under phase II of the centrally-sponsored technical education quality improvement programme (TEQIP-2), also has the World Bank’s support. It will be used to modernise laboratories, libraries and hostels.
The city colleges shortlisted are the Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCOE), Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute and Institute of Chemical Technology. While SPCOE has been selected among undergraduate colleges, the other institutes have been chosen in the postgraduate research category.
