More than 600 students tried their hand at spelling at the annual HDFC Life Spell Bee, India Spells 2011, powered by The Times of India, in association with Everonn Education Ltd and Flipkart.com. The competition gave school children from all over the city a chance to compete in the final India Spells competition which will be held in Mumbai in the month of May.
The second round saw 230 participants, who then had to compete in a written exam to reach the top 10. Once the top 10 were selected, the students passed four rounds that later decided the winner.
After almost four hours, a winner finally emerged. Anindita Mukhopadhyay, a class ninth student from DAV Public School, Airoli, took home the title after she scored 70 out of the 80 marks in a written exam. “The competition was not always easy. The other competitors were really good, but I think the rapid fire, in which I scored full marks, was what helped me win,” said Anindita.
The HDFC Spell Bee competition, which is in its third year, has reached out to more than 25 cities and 1,300 schools. Anindita, will now be representing Navi Mumbai in the grand finale. The winner of the finale will be sent by the Times Group to the Scripps National Spelling Bee at Washington DC.
Anindita’s mother Meera Mukhopadhyay said, “My daughter is very hard-working and is also an avid reader. All that has worked in her favour.”
