AICTE to begin scrutiny of applications for new colleges

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will begin scrutiny of applications this weekend for starting new engineering colleges, polytechnics, and stand alone institutions offering management and computer science courses.

According to AICTE officials, over 120 applications have been received in the State, including 40 for engineering colleges, an equal number of institutions offering MBA, MCA courses and the rest for polytechnics.

“Unlike last year, when there were many classifications, there will be only two categories with respect to land requirement — urban and rural,” said an official.

For starting a new engineering college in an urban area, the land required is five acres and in rural areas, 10 acres. “This will simplify the process,” the official adds. For MBA, MCA and polytechnics, the land requirements vary.

In the first stage of the approval process, a committee will verify the original documents. Initially, the plan is to sit for two days but it could be extended to three days.

Anna University Vice-Chancellor Mannar Jawahar, also chairman, AICTE Southern Region, is returning to the city on Sunday to oversee the process. After document verification, expert committee visits will take place.

As on March 31, only 24 applications were submitted for starting new engineering colleges. After AICTE extended the deadline for submission of applications to April 20, the remaining applications came.

Applications can be submitted online on the AICTE portal till April 20 and will be taken up for scrutiny simultaneously, officials at the southern regional office said. Over 1,000 institutions offering technical education have applied for additional courses, increase in seats and extension of approval this year, officials said.
