Chemistry forms 27 per cent of Indian research publications

Research papers in chemistry account for about 27 per cent of the total research papers published in India, Secretary of the Department of Science and
Technology said.
Asked about 2011 being proclaimed the International Year of Chemistry by the UN, T Ramaswami, a PhD in chemistry himself, said three per cent of the total publications in the world are from India and 27 per cent of them are in the field of chemistry.

Talking to media on the sidelines of a function, he said the focus was on 'green chemistry,' and insisted on the need to involve as many institutions.

Highlighting the noticeable success of PURSE (Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence), Ramaswami said he hoped the same trend continued with the department's new initiave with the Ministry of HRD -- a Council for Grand Alliance initiative that commenced in January last.

Earlier, he made a valedictory speech at the 7th Indo-Australian Conference on IT Security (IACITS 2011) and released a monograph compiled by the IT security experts from both the countries.

The two-day conference was organised by the Society of Electronic Transactions and Security, Chennai, Queensland University of Technology, Australia and IIT-Madras, Chennai.
