The students of Dubai Modern High School, United Arab Emirates, have initiated efforts to rehabilitate Ambal Oorani at Kazhugumalai, Kovilpatti taluk in Thoothukudi district.

It was a rare phenomenon that the non-resident Indians, studying in Std. XII in a school in Dubai, showed interest in “social cleansing” a place in Tamil Nadu. The students were involved in the project under the guidance of DHAN Foundation, Madurai.

A group of students including Anant Goel, Shreyes Shekhar, Indrajit Viswanath and Mayank Mathur, who were involved in cleansing the Ambal Oorani, the water body, came to Tamil Nadu from Dubai on March 24. “The sight of the impure water in the Oorani, which was contaminated, gave us an impetus to work hard and renew our commitment to rise to the occasion,” the Project Team said.

“Since we had a passion for maintaining a clean environment, we were engaged in community participation. When we mingled with the community, they informed us of various problems, which they encountered,” the boys said. They felt that there was a need for access to clean water, removing silt and disposing of waste. The suggestions were put forward. Subsequently, the students affirmed their commitment and promised to help them by adopting a successful strategy. They hope to consult with a think-tank of professionals to sort out the issue.

As an integral part of social commitment to work in the field of water conservation through rain water harvesting methods, the team also sought cooperation from Local Bodies.

To meet financial requirements, we had plans to organise fund-raising programmes like a carnival of dance and a variety entertainment in Dubai. The money generated from the events would be utilised for executing the task, they said.

As a students' initiative in this social welfare project gets ahead with a meaningful contribution, they can strike a right chord.
