All teachers in public medical colleges plan to go on mass casual leave on Wednesday if time-bound promotions are not implemented by the BMC.
The Full-timer Teacher’s Association has been asking the BMC to implement the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines of 2009, which states that the retirement age of the professors be raised from 58 to 62 years and that all teachers be given time-bound promotions. “While the BMC agreed to raise the retirement age, there was no mention of time-bound promotions in the standing committee meeting on wednesday,” said a member of the association. “Promotions should be given irrespective of the number of posts available in the department,” he said.
“While an increase in the retirement age is a good thing for the professors, if the guideline is not implemented in totality, then junior teachers are stuck in their posts. We are going to hold a meeting with the mayor this week,” said Dr Rajesh Dere, secretary of the association.
Dr Sanjay Oak, who heads the civic medical colleges in the city, said that he was not aware of the mass casual leave.
