The Madras High Court has granted an injunction till April 18 restraining the official authorities from insisting on fitting speed governors in vehicles of educational institutions in so far as it related to members of the Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary, Matriculation and Higher Secondary School Managements Association.
When the petition came up before Justice M.Jaichandren, he posted the matter for April 18. He said there would be an order of interim injunction till then.
In its petition, the association, represented by its general secretary, D.Christdass, said buses owned by the members of the association were medium passenger motor vehicles as per the Motor Vehicles Act and they could be driven at a maximum speed of 65 km per hour.
By a G.O. dated June 10, 2010, the government insisted on educational institutions to fix speed governors in their vehicles fixing the maximum speed limit at 50 km per hour.
The Act itself prescribed a maximum speed limit of 65 km per hour for school vehicles, the petitioner said.
