At least 60 government primary schools in Bangalore Rural District face the threat of closure following depleted strength of students from next academic
year.
According to an official release here, this came to light during a review meeting chaired by the District In-Charge Secretary C N Seetharam.

Officials of the education department told the meeting that last year, 14 government schools were shut down and during 2011-12 about 60 primary schools may have to be closed for want to student strength.

Seetharam wondered despite the government extending mid-day meal, free uniform, text books and bicycle for 8th standard students, the government schools have not been able to atttract students.

Some officials pointed out that even parents coming from poor class have been opting for private English medium schools and do not admit their wards to government schools.

Seetharam suggested that officials submit a report on how to improve admission of students in government schools.
