The work-to-rule agitation by the non-teaching staff of the Mumbai varsity is likely to cripple the on-going final-year examination schedule as 1, 600 employees have refused to work beyond the hours stipulated in the rule book. The protest began on March 25. It is during the examination time when the non-teaching administrative staffers are the most over-worked—from dropping question papers to multiple centres to picking up answer sheets in the evening. But with protesters refusing to work beyond the “ten-to-six slot”, answer sheet bundles are being picked up a day later, leaving ample scope for misplacement and malpractice, said principals.
However, controller of examinations, Vilas Shinde, rubbished the fears. “There is no scope for malpractice with the new bar code system. Though we are finding it difficult to manage with the limited staff, the examinations are not affected due to the agitation.” The administrative staff had 27 demands and on top of the list were the long-due promotions.
