UGC cautioned deemed varsities to abide by norms

UGC has barred deemed universities on opening off-campus, establish new departments or new courses without the approval from the Commission.

The University Grants Commission, Dr R.K. Chauhan, secretary said, in a circular to 103 deemed universities in the country, 'it has been observed that over a period of time, some of the deemed to be universities are not functioning as per well-defined objectives and norms, were found to be opening off-campuses, offshore campuses, new departments and study centres without the approval of UGC. Some of them are also imparting education under distance mode without the specific approval from UGC.'
Dr R.K. Chauhan pointed out that it had been noticed that some deemed universities were imparting education through franchisee agreement.

He has warned that any deemed university violates UGC's norms, the Commission will initiate strict action to the extent of making recommendation to the ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) for withdrawal of deemed to be university status.

The union government's notion of granting deemed to university status was to recognise institutions, for their outstanding performance in builing education and work of high standard in their specialised academic fields.
