Just like aspiring engineers and doctors, those aspiring to become pilots should get ready to demonstrate that they have a certain minimum knowledge level to safely take to the sky. The aviation ministry is planning to start conducting common entrance test for getting admission to flying schools in the country to check students’ knowledge of essential aviation topics like physics, avionics and maths.
The government wants this change to happen “as soon as possible” so that only those with a certain knowledge level join flying schools in India and sub-standard co-pilots are not allowed to play with passengers’ lives. This exam, roughly on lines of IIT’s joint entrance exam, could be conducted under the aegis of the DGCA. As of now, anyone who has passed Class 12 with science and maths can join a school and then become a pilot – even fraudulently as the recent cases have shown.
