Only 10 of the total 67 colleges in Meghalaya are certified or accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh informed the assembly.
Replying to a question by Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma, the minister said several criteria were taken into account, including availability of requisite infrastructure, before any college is provided certificate by the NAAC.
She said that the government was 'very concerned' over quality of education, especially in rural areas of the state.
To another query by Sangma during question hour, the education minister informed that altogether 4526 students passed the BA final examination during the year 2006, 3443 in 2007, 4029 in 2008, 4755 in 2009 and 4526 in 2010.
