Here’s a piece of good news: University of Mumbai registered a 60 per cent increase in its student population in the last one decade from 3.42 lakh in 2001-02 to 5.49 lakh at present. The varsity also saw a 100 per cent increase in the number of colleges registered under it. In 2001, a total of 317 colleges were registered under the university. The figure soared to 653 in 2010.
These positive developments were discussed during the university’s budget session. While many senate members were unhappy with this year’s budgetary allocations, some pointed out the underutilisation of funds last year. “Amendments need to be made to ensure that all the students get what they deserve. We have made our suggestions and are hoping that funds will be used in a more appropriate manner this year,” said a senior member.
“This year’s budget gives a lot of importance to the development of the university and the colleges affiliated to it,” Rajpal Hande, director, board of college and university development, said. “Revamp of the Kalina campus is at the top of our agenda. Regular journals will also be given importance this year,” added Hande.
An additional feature in this year’s budget is a series of lectures by Noble laureates. The authorities have earmarked Rs 50 lakh for this. Also on the cards are training centres for teachers and supervisors. A total of Rs five crore has been allocated for examination reform. Many senate members, however, are not convinced about the new marking system.
“Teachers are yet to be trained. The system doesn’t sound very fool proof,” another senior senate member said.
The budget estimates show a deficit of Rs 40.11 crore.
