Learning from past mistakes

After receiving flak from students and parents about the junior college admission process last year, the state education department is taking pains to ensure streamlining of the process this year.

After last year’s confusion, when only principals were around to guide students on how to fill online forms, the department has decided to train teachers as well.

After changing the minimum number of colleges that a student can apply to from last year’s five to 35 this time, the education department has decided not to give permission to any new college once the college code booklet is printed.

“We have kept in mind all the issues students and parents raised last year and are trying to avoid them. There should be no problems this time around,” said Sunil R Chouhan, deputy director of education (Mumbai region).

Last year, many new colleges were added to the system after students submitted forms. Students were surprised to find their names listed in colleges that were not even mentioned in the list.

Directorate of education officials have instructed board exam conductors in the city to inform SSC students about the changes.

“We have also told the exam conductors to tell students that they can pick up their admission booklets from their schools after April 20,” a senior official said. The booklet has information about colleges in various wards in the city and their codes. It also has information on how a student can fill the online admission forms.

Last year, students were given the opportunity to fill a dummy form for practice. This is likely to happen this year too.
