With thousands of students on the threshold of school life, nearly over with their board exams, the question that faces them is what next? Luckily for them, there is no need to get confused about the choice of the course, the degree or even the University, as JIS Group Educational Initiatives launched a comprehensive educational directory, “What Next” at a programme organized jointly by The Bengal Chamber and JIS Group on March 11. Gracing the occasion were educationist and historian Prof Bharati Ray, Prof Sabyasachi Sengupta, vice chancellor of WBUT and Prof Pradip Narayan Ghosh, vice chancellor (Jadavpur University).
Ghosh spoke at length about the career opportunities in pedagogy at the same time underscoring the importance of simply doing nothing but relaxing post the board exams. Here is what he said, “In the interim period students must go through some literature, travelogues and explore the world. To the parents his advise was, “Give your children some time to think on their own. Stop private tuitions. It is killing the students.” He also cautioned the youngsters about being misguided by the lure of quick money and fame urging them to pursue higher studies for better rewards. The chief guest for the day, Bharati Ray calling the directory, “a method of communicating information” also said that a lot depends on how the teacher moulds the students. Sengupta said, “This handbook, as I wish to call it, will take a fraction of the time that one spends going through the websites of different institutes. I am sure that the ones who have taken out this book will not be stagnating at this position. They’ll keep improving upon this one.”
