Open House explores exciting possibilities with new technologies

Fancied a computer that comprehended your senses? Ever wanted a software application that worked on speech recognition? Looked for a tool that converted plain text into enviable calligraphy of your choice?

Not wishful thinking, but exciting possibilities facilitated by latest software tools and technologies, showcased by Open house' 11, a software applications exhibition organised by the Department of Computer Science of Bishop Heber College here on Monday.

A tour of the 28 stalls set up by the undergraduate students of the department was a tutorial in harnessing the virtual world for utility and entertainment. Popular technologies included sixth sense technology using Cam Space, a program that allows the user to control computer games using fingers or ordinary objects projected through a webcam sans keyboard, mouse or joystick. The ‘Cinema secrets revealed' stall was a crowd puller with students deconstructing special graphics sequences in movies.

Practical applications

Students demonstrated how to create simple animation using FLASH, enhance photos with attractive templates using Photo shine and secure files with encryption software, SafeHouse Explorer. Employing TuneUp Utilities to configure, manage and troubleshoot computers and web browser Opera Mini designed primarily for mobile phones was presented alongside video editing, logo designing and photo sharing applications.

Applications of credit card fraud detection software and flexible multi touch screen technology were displayed. In-depth insights into hacking, android mobile communication, cloud computing and functioning of viruses and anti-viruses were also provided.

K.Raj Kumar, Convenor and Head of the Department, said the open house concept was introduced for a first-hand experience of various applications. It was an opportunity for students to exhibit their skills and enhance knowledge. Enthused by the response of the maiden attempt, the exhibition would be planned as an annual event, he added. Earlier, M.Marcus Diepen Boominathan, Principal, inaugurated the event.
