Students from two Andheri colleges—Chinai and MVLU who were barred from appearing for the final exam on account of poor attendance might get a breather.
State minister for higher and technical education, Rajesh Tope, instructed the vice-chancellor’s office to put before the management council a proposal make an exception and allow the students to appear for the exams. Shiv Sena’s youth wing leader Aditya Thackeray called on Tope over the issue.
On March 10, 161 first- and second-year students, including 119 from Chinai and 42 from MVLU, were barred from appearing for the exams with the college management claiming that their attendance was less than 50 per cent. Both the colleges are run by the Laxmi Education Society.
If the management council approves the proposal, the students will be allowed to appear for the exams under distance education or as a special case.
The management and students have been involved in a stand-off over issues regarding the colleges’ functioning. The state government had appointed a committee to look into these issues; the committee has submitted its suggestions.
While Tope did not comment on the issue, sources said that a hearing on the matter is likely to be conducted on March 17.
