Alchemy 2011 to focus on Energy

Alchemy 2011, a two-day symposium by Chemical Engineering department, National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T), on March 18 and 19 promises to provide a platform for young scientists to transform sparks of ideas into innovation through chemical conversion. Having explored various faculties of technology, including chemical engineering, petroleum refining and biotechnology, since its inception, ALchemy would focus on Energy this time.

Prabhu R Nott, Professor and an eminent researcher in the field of study of complex fluids, dynamics of particle suspensions, granular fluids and rheology at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore will deliver a guest lecture providing deeper insights into the study of “Flow behaviour of complex fluids and suspensions.” Participants will get to know how to get into top universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology and CalTech through a video conference with MIT Professor Richard D. Braatz, who will also make a presentation on “Design and Control of Multi-scale Chemical Systems.” Through another video conference with Prof. Ian C. Ward, former director of SaBRE (Scheffield Building Research Institute) which is a partnership between the University of Sheffield, UK and BRE (Building Research Establishment), a central government organization looking into the energy efficiency in buildings, participants will be sensitised to Energy Efficient Building Design. Prof. Richard will also throw light on barriers to making buildings green and energy efficient, their working, benefits, long term sustainability and on the ways of making these technologies more commercial. He will also interact with students on career prospects and opportunities in UK universities.

Yet another highlight of the workshop will be a full-fledged ANSYS Fluent workshop. Fluent is simulation software which can be used to model real problems. It finds extensive application in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) apart from Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, Fluid mechanics and thus a must know for all Chemical and Mechanical engineers.

There are a plethora of other events for paper presentation, poster drafting on the theme of alternate energy resoruces, and determining most feasible absorbant, to infuse inquisitiveness in the minds of the contestants. There will be entertaining events as well, the organisers assure.
