The fate of 370 students of Chinai College of Commerce & Economics, Andheri hangs in the balance as the college has barred them from giving the final exam that begins on Friday, claiming their attendance is below 30 per cent.
However, students say the defaulters’ list is false and many with genuine problems have been put in it. Raunak Shah, a second year student, lost his mother in February. Raunak, according to the college, has less than 30 per cent attendance. “Due to my mother’s demise, I couldn’t attend. The college has barred me from giving the exam,” he said. His father, Deepak, has been going to the college since a month but the college management has not met him.
Rumours that the college is going in for redevelopment are doing the rounds. A case is on regarding this in the Supreme Court. Since 2007 the college has allegedly reduced number of admissions, dismissed teachers and non-teaching staff stating there is not enough work. Ram Sagar Pandey, Co-convenor of Chinai Bachao Samithi, said, “The five-acre plot on which the college stands, will sell for more than Rs 400 crore.”
Minister of Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope is slated to meet the management on March 17. This reporter was not allowed to meet the principal despite several attempts to do so.
