Ensure faculty are qualified: VC

The University of Madras has asked affiliated colleges to ensure the faculty in their institutions are qualified as per the prescribed norms set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) by June.

At a meeting of college secretaries and principals, university Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said that unless institutions appointed qualified principals — only 36 arts and science colleges have full-time principals — by June 30, the university would not allow admission of students. The managements were also asked to appoint separate directors and teachers for evening colleges as well, Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

As the university has already sent a communication to each college detailing the number of faculty and the status of their qualification approvals, the college managements wanted some more time, but it was rejected by the Vice-Chancellor at the meeting. The managements were asked to advertise for posts as there were enough number of eligible candidates. However, a section of academicians argued that the university could appoint teachers without NET if sufficient NET qualified teachers were not available.

After a surprise inspection by the Syndicate members in three colleges lacking in infrastructure and faculty, the university has decided to disaffiliate them.
