Maharashtra will not reimburse school fee of backward class students

The Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court that it would no longer reimburse school fees of backward class students studying in private unaided schools.

The court was hearing two petitions filed by one Naresh Gosavi and Narayan Guru High School.

Government pleader D Nalavade submitted a note of a cabinet decision taken on February 23 and said that it had decided to discontinue free-ship being given to Scheduled Caste, 'Vimukta Jati' and Nomadic Tribes and Special Backward Class students studying in private unaided schools.

Chief Justice Mohit Shah told the government counsel that the cabinet's decision was contrary to the government resolution of 1994, which while introducing the free ship for backward class students did not mention of any categorisation, and had distributed the amount to the schools till April 2007.

The bench has directed the government to clarify its stand in an affidavit by March 14.

Gosavi, a vegetable vendor, had moved court last year after his son and two nephews were forced to leave the Chembur English School due to non-payment of school's fees under the free-ship granted by the government.
