It was a shocker for 20 students from St Xavier’s College after the institute took stern action and debarred them from appearing for University’s final-year exam. The reason: the students had failed to perform up to the minimum academic requirement at the college’s internal level exam.
Students from all streams – BSc, BA and BMM have not been given their hall tickets for the exam. The practical exams for these students begin today. “It is unfair that the college is doing this to us. Some of the students did not work too hard on the internal exam thinking that these marks would not be taken into account for the final varsity exam. Now, we are being told that our child has been barred from appearing for the final-year exam,” said an angry parent.
The college put out a list stating that since the 20 students had not done well in their internal assessment tests, they were not qualified to appear for the varsity exam.
When contacted, Father Frazer Mascarenhas said that the entire issue reveals the lackadaisical approach of the 20 students towards their studies. “We have been giving warnings and instructions to the students from day one. These rules are also part of our college hand-book. No decision has been taken overnight,” Fr Mascarenhas said.
Reiterating the need to bar the students, he said that these students had not even managed to secure what is termed as the – ‘Minimum Academic Requirement’. “We consider a minimum of 35 per cent as an aggregate in overall subjects to allow the students to appear for the MU exam. In fact, even if a student gets 20 marks in one subject but still has an aggregate of 35 per cent, we allow him/ her to appear for varsity exam,” said Fr Mascarenhas. Authorities said that they had even sent letters to the parents of the 20 students in December, informing them about their child’s overall performance.
