CBSE instructs its schools on excess fee collection

Central Board of Secondary Education has instructed schools affiliated to its board not to collect more than that prescribed by the state.

In a recent circular, the CBSE has asked its schools to abide by the state rules with regard to the fee structure, failing which they could face disaffiliation.

Some CBSE schools in the city collect more than Rs 30,000 as annual fees.

Last May, the Tamil Nadu government appointed fee determination committee to come out with a fee structure for schools in the state and prescribed the maximum fee a school can collect in a year under various heads, except hostel and transportation fees.

The maximum limit prescribed for a senior secondary school was Rs 11,000.

The circular, signed by CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi, said, "Fees should normally be charged under the heads prescribed by the department of education of the state or Union territory for schools of different categories."
