There is good news for students who wish to pursue aviation as their career option. The Vels University in the city has started a new programme for aviation. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle Education, Mr Ishari K. Ganesh, chancellor of Vels University, who is also India’s youngest chancellor, said that the university would be offering a four-year degree programme “Associate member of Aeronautical Society of India,” which will be equivalent to Aircraft Maintenance Engineer course.
Mr Ganesh said that in the past numerous business houses had entered the aviation industry by starting new airlines, which needs more manpower. “With Indian Airlines alone ordering 150 new aircraft, apart from the existing 600 aircraft of various airline companies we need about one lakh persons in the aviation industry. In India we still use the old 737 aircraft that needs more engineers to maintain than the new class of aircraft,” the chancellor pointed out.
The University would be offering the course to 40 students initially and depending on the patronage from students the number would be increased after getting approval from the Directorate of Civil Aviation. A student with minimum of 60 per cent marks in plus two board exams can join the course after clearing written, oral and medical test, Mr Ganesh said.
The university has planned to start a one-year diploma course in aircraft maintenance next academic year, which will offered at their 50-acre sprawling campus in Karanodai in the northern suburbs of the city.
“We have also tied up with South Indian Film Artists association for B.Sc (film technology) course. As per the memorandum of understanding, film artists will conduct classes for students, apart from providing hands on training at shooting spots,” he said. Vels University offers an array of courses across 10 schools of study, for over 7,000 students. We provide job-oriented courses in all sectors of our university. I am indeed proud to state that we offer education from Pre-KG to Ph.D. level, the chancellor pointed out. The primary goal of our education is to make one a better human being, hence We make no compromise in the quality of our education, in striving to be the best university this side of the equator, Mr Ganesh added.
