Breaking away from the tradition, more candidates, especially girls, had started showing an interest in veterinary science as a career option, said L.N. Mathuram, Professor and Head, Education Cell, Madras Veterinary College.
Addressing a programme organised to commemorate International Women's Day — World Veterinary Year being celebrated this year — at Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) here on Tuesday, she said that in the United States of America, veterinarians earned huge salaries. Women pursuing veterinary science should not confine themselves to education and research and get involved in field work to gain practical knowledge about livestock, she said.
Entrepreneurs — Alfonsa of Tuticorin and Innasi of Vellapatti — shared their success in fish farming. M.C. Nandeesha, Dean, FCRI, presided over the programme.
M. Nagoor Meeran, Professor and Head, Department of Fisheries Extension, and N.V. Sujathkumar, Associate Professor, spoke. Students from various departments of FCRI attended the programme.
