A Centre-appointed panel to formulate a package for jobs in J&K has recommended reservation for the state’s students in schools and higher education institutions across the country. The PM had set up the committee last August as part of his efforts to reach out to the Kashmiris in the backdrop of the summer unrest that claimed over 110 lives.
Ex-RBI governor C Rangarajan, who heads the six-member panel, said the Centre needed to persuade public schools and higher educational institutions to reserve seats for J&K students. “Delhi public schools need to set aside seats for children from J&K,” he said after releasing the panel’s first report on Wednesday. He called for a need to promote education and a special scholarship scheme to benefit 25,000 J&K students over five years. “Rs 1, 200 crore need to be allocated to cover tuition, hostel fee, cost of books and other needs for this scheme.”
The panel has also recommended setting up of two IGNOU regional placement centres in Srinagar and Jammu to provide an interactive job portal, career-specific counselling, competency mapping and train job aspirants to plug skill gaps.
