Tambaram: With several eminent scientists urging the youth to come up with innovative research, whose benefits would reach the common man and serve society, the three-day first Indian Youth Science Congress, came to close on Sunday.
Attended by more than 500 young scientists, researchers, academicians, college and school students, the theme of the congress was ‘Youth and Shaping the Future of Innovations in Science for Societal needs.’
The three day event, was organised by M.S.Swaminathan Research Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute for Youth Development and SRM University
Speaking at the conference on Sunday, T.Ramaswami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, said a majority of the scientific contribution was not converted into a productive manner.
Although India has several scientists, the research benefits were yet to penetrate deep to bring out a positive impact in the common man, he said.
Stating his department's support to the Indian Youth Science Congress and its Association, he expressed confidence the congress would be self-motivated and encourage more number of youth take up research in science and technology as it was the duty of young men and women to take the country forward in the years to come.
Member of Parliament and MSSRF Chairman M.S.Swaminathan said the country would continue to remain poor as long as its human resources were undervalued and its material resources overvalued.
During the course of the three-day congress, the important topics discussed were Innovations in science for societal needs, Scientific innovations in relation to achieving the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals, Science for human security and well-being, Innovations in relation to the national missions for climate change, Inculcating scientific temper among young minds and young scientists and shaping India’s future.
The Indian Youth Science Congress Association was formed during the three-day meet.
