CBSE plans to do-off board exams for class X

CBSE is assessing all possibilities to scrap class X board exams altogether in the forthcoming year, which was earlier this year made optional, said a senior board official.

Doing off board exams at one shot would have led to adverse reactions. Hence, CBSE prudently gathered enough public, teachers and parents support.

An overwhelming majority decided to give the exams a miss and instead appear for school exams this year, when CBSE offered the choice.

CBSE officials spent the last year traveling across the country organizing workshops, debates and discussions to familiarize schools and parents with the new system.

''Gradually, we are looking at moving towards a system where there will be no board exam. Currently we are working towards equipping schools to do their own assessment and diagnose children on their own,'' a senior board official said. ''

As yet, we have not set a timeframe for when we will do away with the board exam,'' said the official.

Although a difficult transition, the board has chosen to go about the process in a gradual, phased manner, rather than imposing the system on people. Only 31 % have opted for board exams, giving the view to do away with board exam.

CBSE is earnestly working on possible means to ensure students who opt out of boards face no problems during admission while changing cities or applying to another board after school.
