The visually challenged can now enjoy 'reading' their favorite books in the District Central Library in the city after special equipment was installed that
would help them read books in digital and braille formats.
District Collector C Munianathan, who sought the help of PPN Power Generating Company, Pillaiperumalnallur to establish the equipment worth Rs one lakh to the library under its corporate social responsibility scheme, launched the facility here.
Speaking on the occasion, he said initially five pieces of equipment with headphone facilities have bee provided. "Based on user feedback, the facility will be enhanced," he said.
The Collector stressed the need to make available reading materials in various alternative formats to help differently abled persons.
He also listed out schemes being implemented for visually challenged, including cash awards for toppers in SSLC, HSC exams, higher education scholarships, unemployment doles and financial aid for those who marry visually challenged persons.
