JK CM inaugurates Institute of Human Genetics

Terming it as a landmark, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today inaugurated the Institute of Human Genetics (IHG) in Jammu University.
"This is a landmark step in application of modern technology to address the challenges of genetic disorders and other diseases of far reaching impact," Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said after inaugurating the institute.
   
Giving details of the project, the Director of the Institute Subash Gupta said that among other activities, the institute will generate data on human genetic diseases in Jammu and Kashmir and genetic screening of patients of high risk families.
   
The institute will also help in detection of cancer of different natures by Fish Technique method and conduct population screening for diabetes, genetic diversity,
bio-chemical screening, he said.
   
It will impart training to the students of medical stream and life sciences in the concerned fields. It will also work for public awareness against various diseases including those of genetic nature, he added.
   
Bio-chemical analysis of cells, gene detection and chromosome studies in human beings will also be the part of the activities in the institute to find out genetic disorders and suggest corrective measures for these, Gupta said.
   
The institute envisages three phases involving an expenditure of about Rs six crore. Its first phase launched by Chief Minister has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.60 crore and the other two phases would come in due course of time, he added.
