Mathematical models for agriculture to help small and marginal farmers, management of pests, maintenance of irrigation water and drinking water sources enhance agriculture productivity.
Financial mathematics is also the need of the hour.
These were highlighted at an international conference on logic, information control and computation at Gandhigram Rural Institute at Gandhigram near here on Friday.
GRI Vice-Chancellor SM Ramasamy said the country needed more mathematical models to detect and assess quantum of fossil fuel in 13 oil bearing locations to calculate future energy needs of the country for the next 10 or 20 years.
Special models were also needed to predict and forecast cyclone, tsunami and earth quake and other natural calamities.
Combined and collaborative efforts of hydrologists, water chemists, sociologists and environmentalists with mathematicians would help develop ideal models for social development.
Ultimately, people would benefit, he added.
