Exam stress continues to take its toll on the city’s youth, with psychiatrists saying they are being approached by up to thrice as many students this year as compared to previous years.
While HSC exams began on Tuesday and SSC boards will follow later, students and parents have already begun queuing up at counsellors’ offices to seek help with fighting the pressure. Doctors have also been receiving a huge number of calls from tense students.
This time last year, clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany was counselling around three students a day. Now, she counsels six. “Also, on a given day, the number of students calling me goes up to 25,” she said.
Psychiatrist Anjali Chhabria said, “A high-scoring Class X student suffering from severe anxiety before the prelims visited me. Soon, a whole bunch of her friends were seeking counselling too.”
