Kochi: Calling upon the engineers in the State to blend spirituality with technology, Padma Bhushan awardee and founder-director of IIM-Bangalore N S Ramaswamy said that engineers should focus on evolving technologies for the betterment of mankind.
"There should be a spiritual approach to engineering. It's high time that we give more thrust to yoga and meditation. Our approach should be more philosophical and spiritual. Kerala should become the spiritual capital of the world," Ramaswamy said after inaugurating the valedictory function of the two-day seminar, 'ChEM 2009', organised by the Cochin chapter of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) here the other day.
He said that the engineers in the country were not given due recognition by the government and all of them had become instruments in the hands of politicians.
"The power is being taken away from the engineers and technocrats by politicians. We should stand united and regain the power and commit ourselves for the betterment of the society," he added.
The function also honoured 10 outstanding chemical engineers, who had carved a niche for themselves in the field of engineering, education and industry.
They were Satish Dhawan Space Centre director M Chandradathan, Special Secretary to the Chief Minister M P Sukumaran Nair, Indian Rare Earths chairman and managing director S Siva Subramanian, TCCL managing director Muhammed K A, BPCL-Kochi Refineries LTD general manager (technical) John Minu Mathew, FACT retired general manager D Kulandai Raj, Hindustan Latex Ltd retired executive director Darly Francis, MET School of Engineering principal K Neelakantan Namboodiripad, KMML retired general manager U Chandrahasan and HLL Lifecare Limited executive director(operations) S Ramachandra Panicker.
IIChE national president Sushil Kumar, IIChE (Kochi) chairman R Venugopal, Bhoomi Keralam project director Biju Prabhakar and IIChE (Kochi) secretary Babu Jose and IIChE (Kochi) treasurer K F Sajo spoke on the occasion.
