IMA opposes rural health course of govt

Orissa unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has opposed the proposed introduction of Bachelor of Rural Health Care (BRHC) by the Centre, saying it would increase the number of quacks.
"If the government desires to increase the number of doctors, they can do it by increasing the number of undergraduate seats in medical colleges by relaxing the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms," outgoing president of Orissa unit of IMA Dr Sarat Kumar Mohapatra said here.
 
Addressing the 62nd annual state conference of IMA here yesterday, Mohapatra said the programme of BRHC should be opposed as it would not provide quality medical service and the standard of doctors would go down.
 
A meeting of Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and state health ministers in Hyderabad last month had endorsed the introduction of the Bachelor of Rural Health Care (BRHC) courses.
 
Mohapatra also advocated for single window counters for registration of Nursing Homes and Clinics in Orissa for quick disposal of pending cases.
 
He appealed to the members to help the government in stopping pre-natal sex determination.
