At a seminar on ‘Production and Operations Management’ organised by Hallmark Business School recently, Ramanathan, Associate Professor, Operations Management, Nottingham University, delineated the subtle difference between production and operations.

While production was the conversion of raw materials into finished product, the intermediate stages were operations. Effective operation in each stage to the satisfaction of customers determined success.

Marketing was closely knitted with production and operations management. Location, layout, logistics, environmental issues and quality development were aspects that decided the efficiency and success of production operations, Dr. Ramanathan said.

On reverse logistics, he said that customers abroad had the right of returning the products if they were not satisfied, within a specified period, usually, 30 days. Design for de-assembly was also important as it facilitated easy scrapping. There were websites providing rating of companies based on customer satisfaction index, said Dr. Ramanathan.
