The PMO has fine tuned the solution for the right regulator for medical education. It has decided that while the health ministry’s National Council for Human Resource in Health (NCHRH) will be the sole regulator of medical education—including degress like MBBS and MD—the HRD ministry’s National Commission for Higher Education and Research (NCHER) will have a say on medical as well as inter-disciplinary research.
The NCHRH will be the sole custodian of MBBS courses throughout the country, including syllabus, quality and number of seats in each institute. Former Union health secretary K Sujatha Rao told TOI, “We will set the standards of medical education and regulate the norms just like we do now. However, universities will now have the freedom to innovate and be creative in their teaching and start new diverse courses if they like.”
