On the morning of February 13, Madhusudan Mancha was brimming with people. The occasion was Mentaid’s annual concert. The program began with a welcome dance followed by the staging of Birpurush, Rabindranath Tagore’s popular children’s drama. Arpita Ohdedar was a treat to watch as Birpurush. All the other actors too played their roles with competence. More than anything else, it was heartening to see the more able children helping their friends back stage.
Children sang Rabindra Sangeet as a tribute to Tagore. Seeing the children of Mentaid play the instruments so deftly, one was moved beyond words.
This was followed by a jam session that saw Eric Fraser play the flute along with the students of Mentaid, all of whom accompanied him on other instruments. They enthralled the audience with their performance.
Dressed in attractive costumes the students were seen enjoying as much as the audience. The three hour program finally came to an end with the Mentaid song sung by the students and the teachers with parents and friends too joining in the chorus.
Eric Fraser, who is in India as a Fulbright senior research scholar, said, “ What a fantastic program you have put together. I am very moved, and humbled, to see such fine work. Mentaid really is a special place and should be the guiding light for the world, in the sphere of work with special children”.
