Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University to revamp curriculum of PG courses

Tamil Nadu Dr. M. G. R. Medical University has set off the process of revamping curriculum of all postgraduate medical courses offered by it and affiliated institutions.

Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor, said here that the university had sought suggestions from medical colleges. “The process will be completed in three months' time. New curriculum for M.S., M.D. and other PG courses will come into effect from the coming academic year,” he told The Hindu here on Saturday. A special committee had been formed, drawing experts from all specialities.

Earlier, speaking at a State-level orthopaedics conference, the Vice-Chancellor observed that changing the curriculum was the focus now because the M.S. programme was started in 1960s.

Dr. Natarajan said that the heads of departments of postgraduate teaching institutions in the field of medicine in the State had also been asked to offer suggestions so that “we can change the clinical and examination pattern.”

He asked senior surgeons/faculty members to send their suggestions to the university, which, he said, was formulating guidelines for the proposed changes in the curriculum for PG medical courses. The Vice-Chancellor was in the city to participate in the 44{+t}{+h} annual conference of Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association- ‘TNOACON 2011', which was attended by orthopaedic doctors from all over the State.

Karumuttu T. Kannan, chairman, Thiagarajar College of Engineering; P. V. Jayasankar, president, Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association (TNOA); S. Raja Ravivarma, secretary, TNOA, and V. Raviraman, organising chairman, were among those who spoke.
