NASSCOM Foundation that works towards galvanizing the corporate social responsibility (CSR) space in the IT industry in India; and the social development arm of NASSCOM, in association with Genpact announced the winners of its third annual NASSCOM Social Innovation Honours 2011 on February 8. The honours were given to deserving projects that strive to bring about social change and development through Information, Communications and Technology (ICT)
Pavan Murali and Gayatri Hedge of SP Jain Institute of Management were declared winners of Genpact NASSCOM Social Innovation Honours 2011 in the category ICT led Innovative Student Concept for ‘Kabadiwala’ at the NASSCOM India Leadership Summit 2011.
The concept of project ‘Kabadiwala’ is an online customized portal and a SMS based solution that connects Kabadiwalas with households as well as recyclers. With the twin aims of empowering the kabadiwalas and ensuring greater recycling efficiency, the students will set up an information agency. The agency will also serve as an enabler platform for kabadiwala branding, skills training, and operations streamlining.
Its Impact:
o Every kabadiwala involved in the project is expected to increase volume of recycling by 48 tons every year, and reduce operating costs. The project expects an increase of Rs 7500 in monthly net income
o Their children can go to better schools & their families will appreciate their positive & contributive role in society
o Households will behave responsibly while earning
o Positive environmental impact - 13.5 million kilos of waste will be diverted from landfills and recycled by Year 3 of operations
The Honours were judged by a jury comprising Dilip Chenoy, managing Director & CEO of the National Skill Development Corporation, (NSDC); Jaithirth (Jerry) Rao (chairman, NASSCOM Foundation); Kiran Karnik, former president of NASSCOM ; Narayana Murthy (founder-chairman, Infosys Technologies Limited; Dr. Vasanthi Srinivasan, associate Professor, Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources Management, IIM Bangalore, chairperson, Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship.
Jaithirth (Jerry) Rao said, “This year, every entry has been distinct and innovative. I am glad to say that all winners have lived up to the challenge of showcasing innovations with exemplary use of ICT. These would definitely contribute towards bringing sustainable and inclusive growth. We hope that many more would now be inspired to innovate!”
