12 Students of Bharath University, under the guidance of Roboin team bagged their debut award in Singapore for “Best Performance for Innovation”. Part of Spring Innovations held at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore they clinched the honours for creating a humanoid robot and an animal like robot. Apart from Bharat University, there were around 66 other universities who had presented their robotic creations in the lead up to the finale.
The robot designed by the team is a humanoid Robot, which is 58 cm long and weighs 4.3 kg. It has 25 degrees of freedom. The humanoid robot can dance, sing, walk, sit, stand up, pick objects, do face recognition and path tracking to name a few. The innovative approach that Bharat University students and Roboin did on the humanoid robot was the simple manipulation of the touch sensors on the leg of the robot, as they wanted it to recognize the obstacles on its path and use the camera for face recognition. To their credit, the robot was able to identify people based on the presets given. Bharath University in collaboration with Roboin are slated to work for advanced researches with this robot.
Apart from Spring Innovations, the students also participated in Singapore Robotic Games 2011 competition, in the open category, which gave them the opportunity to compete with countries like Singapore, China and Indonesia.
Lakshmi Narayan, chancellor of BU said, “Robotics has been an interesting field of research and it needs creative abilities and technical knowledge. We are proud that our students were able to design challenging robots and present it at an International stage and won honors! ”
Jaishankar Bharatharaj, founder of Roboin was quite upbeat, “Roboin has always been in search of young innovative minds to engage in the field of robotics. We train and engage students in the field of Robotics to design humanoid robots. We have participated in many Robotic competitions representing India and winning honours. We are proud that we have built India’s one of first humanoid robot.”
The students also conducted a live demonstration of the humanoid robot which entitled them to this recognition at Singapore.
