HRD Ministry forms panel to hear 44 varsities deemed unfit

HRD Ministry has set up a 3 member committee to give a hearing to 44 deemed universities that were found unfit to be accorded varsity status as they lack appropriate academic infrastructure standards.

The committee will be headed by additional secretary of HRD Ministry A S Thakur. Two other additional secretaries -- Sunil Kumar and N K Sinha -- are the other members of the panel, officials said.

The Ministry had sent notices to these institutions in January following a Supreme Court order.

The committee will go through the responses of each of the universities before sending its report to a review panel of experts, which had found deficiencies in these varsities.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had last month said the Centre will issue show-cause notices to all deemed universities and take a decision on each case within a given time frame.

The Centre on January 11 had said it will have a re-look on the decision to de-recognise them.

Attorney General G E Vahanvati gave the undertaking to a bench of justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma that the government will reconsider its earlier decision and send fresh individual notices, grant personal hearing and opportunity to make further representation.
