Maharastra colleges told to get NAAC accreditation by 09-end

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has asked all the colleges in the state to complete entire formalities for getting an accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), by year-end with a view to provide these institutions a global standing.

'This is one of the major steps required by the colleges to compete with the global competition which is close to their doorsteps,' Director, Higher Education, R V Kirdak said.

Although Maharashtra is leading in the number of accredited colleges in the country, a large number of institutes are yet to get the accreditation. This year's target for 100 per cent accreditation has to be completed,' Kirdak said.

Speaking at a two-day sate level principals conference on 'NAAC accreditation: Methods and Procedures' held at Sathye College in suburban Vile Parle, Kirdak said some of th e colleges are even ready for re-accreditation.

The education department is setting up cells to help the colleges complete the 100 per cent accreditation target in the state, he said. The only state which has 100 per cent accreditation of its colleges is Haryana.

Kirdak said academic excellence and administrative excellence should be given importance as they would enable India to become a knowledge superpower.

He favoured close interaction between academia and administration to improve the standard of colleges. If universities come across any irregularities, FIR should be filed so that the system gets corrected.

Subash Deo, Principal, Gogate-Joglekar College, Ratnagiri, said some of the core values the colleges have to keep in mind are: contribution to quality human resource development, fostering global competence among the students, inculcating values in students, promoting use of technology
and quest for excellence.

N Nikam, Principal, Chandmal Tarachand Bora College, Shirur, Pune district, said teaching, learning and evaluation constitute the bulk of the marks in accreditation process and the colleges and universities should tell their strength and weaknesses frankly and be precise in telling both.

R N Pabrekar, State Coordinator, National Service Scheme (NSS), said the students should be taken as focus of getting accreditation as their feed back about teachers and others make significant contribution during the assessment. Pabrekar said such principal conferences should be held in rural parts of the state also.
