The All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) cadre staged a protest condemning the lack of infrastructure facilities at the Anna University – Thirukuvalai campus, on Friday.
The protest call was issued by the AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on February 2. The campus has been functioning at a partitioned section of the Anjugam Muthuvelar Government Higher Secondary School since its commencement on 2008.
While a private engineering college functioning with such poor infrastructure would have had its licences cancelled, the government engineering college here was allowed to continue, the demonstrators said.
The protestors also alleged that over 40 acres of land was taken over from Dharmapuram Adhinam, and the farmers, who were on lease, were never compensated for the acquisition.
Few months ago, the students took to streets demanding better facilities and condemning the ‘apathetic' conditions of education. Lab sessions were held at Tiruchi, and were compressed to few classes over a fortnight, students alleged. This had jeopardised their chances during placements, and they stood disadvantaged in comparison with other students, they said.
The students were stationed in five different places at Koondayur, Velankanni, Maavur, and Valivalam.
The campus hosts over 800 students in five courses that include Civil, Mechanical, ECE, Computer Science, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
The demonstration was led by Durai Govindarajan, State president, AIADMK farmers' wing.
